Derry got a special visitor on January 18th, 2023. Senator Jeanne Shaheen visited Derry’s Aviation & Alan Shepard Mural commemorating space and aviation in the town of Derry.

The mural was created by the Derry Arts Council as part of a project by the Public Arts Committee. The mural spans across a portion of the Derry Rail Trail and portrays the life of Derry native, Alan B. Shepard as well as the history of aviation and space flight.

Shaheen’s visit is especially significant as Shaheen is the Chair of the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee which has oversight over NASA, National Science Foundation, and other agencies. The visit was guided by Derry’s artist laureate, Karen Munday Lincoln, who was the main artist on the mural. Lincoln talked about the history and research that went into the mural as well as all of the work that was put in by the community. An entire section of the mural is dedicated to the community and what we see as the future of space and aviation. The section features painted bubbles which contain drawings and art made by the public. The mural shows a shining future for Derry!
